CineMuseSpace: A Cinematic Musée Imaginaire of Spatial Cultural Differences

Biography

Ruxandra Kyriazopoulos-Berinde is an architect schooled at the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca, Romania. She has a background of professional experience, having worked for practices in Romania, Denmark, Sweden and the UK, in the field of residential and heritage design. In 2008 she was part of the design team from the Danish office Exners Tegnestue, that won the international competition for the reconversion of Skt Nikolai cathedral ruins in Visby, Sweden, into a cultural centre.

In 2016, Ruxandra completed an AHRC-funded PhD at the School of Architecture, University of Sheffield, UK, entitled "Moving Images of Home: Tracing an architectural phenomenography through the films of Ingmar Bergman and Andrei Tarkovsky". The thesis explores film's ability to communicate phenomenological layers of inhabited space, through a close reading of Tarkovsky's and Bergman's work, spatial memories and cultural context. Research included field work in select locations from Russia, Italy, Estonia and Sweden, participation in film events and trainings, archival work at the Swedish Film Institute in Stockholm and at the Andrei Tarkovsky International Institute in Florece, as well as an artistic residency awarded by the Bergman Foundation, on the filmmaker's estate from Fårö island, Sweden.

Ruxandra joined the team of CineMuseSpace in autumn 2017. She continues working on small scale architectural and media projects. Research interests include place memory, cultural heritage and intermedial representations of space.
